Travel Journal - Why and How?

Travel journals are little gems which are to be treasured and then passed on to the next generation. Many years later you will try and remember and think about all that you had done. Many part of the travel would have escaped you memory, but with the travel journal it will be fresh in you mind, as if it has happened just yesterday. So it is advisable to keep all the memories back with you and to keep a travel journal. The first step towards keeping a travel journal is to take a blank notebook. Now you have to take time to write in it. You will think time is scarce when one is traveling, but actually there is plenty of time if you want to take it out. While sitting at Airports, waiting for a bus, or at hotels you get plenty of time to write a day's experiences.

The basic idea is to write and you don't need heavy language to write it. Keep it simple whether it is in paragraphs or just points or even sentences to describe an incident; the punctuation, the grammar and language do not matter. While meeting people we often exchange names, address, phone no, email-id etc. Generally we tend to write it down on any paper we get in our hand be it a napkin or a receipt. Take down all this information in your journal as soon as you have time. They will be with you even years later and you probably can and would want to contact the person.

A very good example of a journal is Anne Frank's Diary. In her diary, Anne kept a running commentary of the two years her family spent hiding from the Nazis. Her experiences were not lighthearted but your will certainly be and it will remind you of the wonderful times you had. The travel journal should not have space for other things. It should have a case to protect it from rain, spills etc., moreover the journal should contain blank areas to write your notes, lastly the journal should contain sign spaces to remind you to keep notes on specific things. These signs should have the name of person/persons, who you traveled with, where you stayed and if you enjoyed it, who and how you met and contact information for them, places to eat, and things to see and if you would visit again.

Many people keep online journals, here you can type your journals on a computer or a similar device or you can even upload the details of your trip to various websites available. The travel journal will contain comprehensive information with contact information for other travelers and people you met, enough detail to provide you with a guide if you travel to the location a second time, memories to reflect upon years later, and best of all something to give you children and grandchildren later in life. You can involve whole family in this Endeavour, especially children. It will be like an educational experience for them. The travel journal is like a Personal Diary of the good times you had while traveling.
