Iron Cookbook

Good vegetarian food?
I've been a vegetarian for over a year now but I've been getting sick a lot lately because I'm not getting enough protein and iron. I'm a very picky eater and I usually don't like that tofu stuff but I do eat veggie burgers. I've tried food from vegetarian cookbooks but I just think all that stuff is disgusting. Are there any foods with protein that taste good too?
And also,I take a vitamin daily for iron, but it's still not enough. Are there any good vitamins you would suggest?
Betty-- Actually, I became a vegetarian because I don't want to eat animals and it helps the environment. Nothing to do with my health. And I don't plan on giving up, because there is no way I can eat meat without thinking of the poor innocent animal that died.
And I do drink smoothies often, I try to eat nuts as much as possible, cheese, and I eat eggs and salads.
Thankyou so much for the answers!
Do you actually know that you have a protein and iron deficiency or are you just assuming? Iron is believable, lots of people, vegetarian or not experience iron deficiencies, but protein deficiencies are very rare.
Anyway, you can get protein from nuts, seeds, beans, other legumes, and whole grains. Bean burritos are a good way to get a lot of iron. Throw some nuts or seeds on salads for added protein. Buy some protein powder like hemp or soy powder to put into your smoothies.
Iron is found in legumes (beans, lentils, etc.), leafy greens (broccoli, spinach, kale, etc.), nuts, seeds, and dried fruit (especially dried apricots). Iron is best absorbed with vitamin C, so eat fruits or veggies high in vitamin C with iron filled foods. Eat a baked potato (good amount of iron) with broccoli stuffed inside.
Quinoa (keen-wah) is a grain which has the highest protein and iron content of any grain. Lentils are a type of legume that are very high in protein and also contain a high amount of iron.
The link below will give you information on how to stay healthy as a vegetarian. Good luck getting healthy.
