When I order a vinyl record should I expect to receive the original cardboard sleeve?
I have been buying a few Michael Jackson vinyl records (12" LPs and 7" singles) over Amazon marketplace recently, and on quite a few occasions when I have received them through the post the seller has not supplied me with the original cardboard picture sleeve. Often thy come in the original internal paper sleeve, or just a replacement paper white sleeve?
Firstly, if I just receive the record in a white replacement paper sleeve should I be entitled to a refund (unless they state it when selling, which thy didn't)? .... I kind of feel a little cheated ... for example, if I order a used CD, I still expect to receive the original case with inlay material.
Secondly, in the past were records always supplied with a proper carboard sleeve with an additional paper sleeve, or were they sometimes sold purely with a paper sleeve?
There are different expectations with singles and albums (and please do remember that vinyl singles can be either 7 inch or 12 inch, whereas LP albums are always 12 inch).
You should always, and I mean ALWAYS get the picture sleeve with a vinyl LP album unless the listing very clearly states otherwise. I would be very annoyed if I didn't, and would send the album back for a refund. It's part of the attraction of owning the album in the first place.
Singles (7 inch and 12 inch) are a different matter, as they didn't always come with picture sleeves in the past. In the 1970s and earlier, especially, they often came in a generic company sleeve, which would be either Epic or Motown records in the case of Michael Jackson.
If the particular single I was buying originally came with a picture sleeve, though, I would expect to get this with the record. From the early 80s onwards, most singles came in picture sleeves.
There are all sorts of pitfalls with buying vinyl on Amazon and eBay, but getting the original picture sleeve is such a basic thing I'm frankly amazed any seller tries to get away with not including it.
When buying/selling any items, missing packaging is a defect that should always be mentioned by the seller. Vinyl records are no exception.
