How much water needs to be on a Book ( a soft cover biotech manual for fungi to grow)?

my school librarian recently determined that a book i turned in (2 Books) had water damage on them. I Disagreed trying to tell them that there was minimal water damage on it. They determined that having the books in the text book room was a HEALTH HAZARD because of potential "fungi" that could grow and i now have to pay 127 dollars. Either give your opinion on the situation or answer the question i really don't care.

You are dealing with opinions and policy issues from a position of disadvantage. Your librarian wishes to get rid of the book to avoid any possible future complications -- such as a lawsuit from the family of another student claiming harm caused by microbes or fungi contacted by handling the "contaminated" book. Such a claim would be hard either to prove or disprove yet the school might be found guilty of negligent behavior and even if found not guilty it would cost more than the value of the book to defend against such a charge.

On the other hand, I have accidentally gotten water on some of my own textbooks, dried them and still have them in my collection years later. Unfortunately, anectedotal or hear-say evidence is useless to you. I would approach it as follows.

Fact: Many paper documents including books are historical documents and irreplaceable. Methods exist for repairing water damage. Fact: Your library has no motivation to spend time repairing a $127 book that can be replaced. However, if that is their policy they have an obligation to inform their customers (students) that they will need to pay to replace any book damaged by water when in their possession.

You feel they have an obligation to post such a notice. Since most minor damage is easily repaired if drying is started within 48 hours they might consider adding that they will attempt to repair water damaged books if returned within 48 hours of being damaged but they can not promise success. This is their obligation because it is not obvious that getting water on something that can be dried out is "damaging" it. Offer to do some volunteer work in the library in lieu of paying the $127 if they will post such a notice. You don't want others to find themselves in the same predicament....
