What would be some creative writing ideas for a journal?

I have considered writing a journal for quite some time now, however, I suppose you could say I've lacked motivation. After my 4 years of marine corps. service is over I'd like to be confident in my writing skills and go to college. I'm not the best writer so what I'd like to do is start a system or pattern or something where everyday It's not just me writing random thoughts..... or is that ok? Maybe answering questions in an essay format or something would improve my skills. Please post any or all ideas.

It can be as random as you want, though you might like to have a theme I suppose. My sort of, unvoiced theme in my journal is how grateful I am for life. So it reflects on that, and that works for me because it makes me appreciate things even if I'm upset. But your journal is for you, and writing will help you get better at writing, it's all practice. Just write about what is important to you, be it your job, family or friends, or even something like nature or the arts.
